'Those waiting for a follow-up to The Cold Calling were not disappointed. The wonderfully-named Grayle Underhill finds herself investigating the disappearance of an exotic celebrity medium. Once again, the star is the cross-dressing Welsh ventriloquist shaman Cindy Mars Lewis… Delightful.

'Brilliant… a fantastic addition to the classic British crime story with a twist… sure to set a new genre benchmark in years to come.'

'Remarkable. Those looking for a highly original novel that produces more than a few frissons of fear need look no further.'

And - an even stronger recommendation than any of the above, I promise you - this is also my wife's favourite.

Essentially, it's a modern take on Victorian spiritualism, which was really very materialistic. At Overcross Castle, in the foothills of the Malverns, in the 1870s, the medium Anthony Abblow carried out certain experiments under the patronage of the wealthy industrialist Barnaby Crole. Over a century later, their work proves inspirational to a number of very iffy operators. All they need, to develop their plans, is a medium. A really good medium. Someone like Seffi Callard whose clients may have included the late Princess Diana.

Grayle Underhill is unfortunately present when the bad guys come for Seffi.  Time to involve DI Bobby Maiden, who still has problems of his own and would not, in any circumstances, have chosen to come up against the 'reformed' gangland hard-man Gary Seward, for whom getting rich is rather less important than never getting dead.
